Voices of Leaders:What
are the university's key latest achieve-ments?
With a 120-years history, National
Taichung University of Education (NTCU) has an excellent
tradition of teacher education, especially at the primary
school level. In terms of provision of teacher education,
NTCU is in a leading position in Taiwan. All three teacher
education programs which are made of primary school teacher,
pre-school teacher, and special education teacher are
awarded by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of
China, with the status of an excellent teacher education
university. The key latest achievements of NTCU are as
follows:
(1)
Top 3 of the National Universities in terms of
undergraduate student registration ratio in the 2017 school
year.
(2)
All our teacher education programs for primary
school, kindergarten education, and special education have
been listed in the best universities of teacher education in
Taiwan in 2018 and 2019.
(3)
In the leading position in National Teacher Licensure
Examinations (more than 90 % of pass ratio in 2019).
(4)
We are one of the winners of Golden File Award
Management by the government in Taiwan.
(5)
We have more than 250 partner universities outside
Taiwan.
(6)
Having a faculty member from our College of Education
awarded by Ministry of Science and Technology as outstanding
research fellowship in 2018.
(7)
Having received a competitive grant of about
US$1,494,986 from Ministry of Education in Taiwan in 2018.
(8)
We are in the 7th place in terms of income generated
from cooperation between university and industry as
US$24,725 per faculty member among all the public
universities and colleges in Taiwan in the 2016 school year.
(9)
Our graduates with more high employment ratios than
the counterparts of the so-called Top Universities in Taiwan
according to the data released by the Ministry of Education
in 2018.
VoL:What
are the strategic plans for the upcoming year?
We aim to reach the target of 3 % annual
growth rate of expenditure and research performance.
We also wish to maintain the leading
position of teacher education in terms of our excellent
status as a teacher education university and the national
teacher licensure pass ratios.
VoL:Regarding
the university's internationalization, what are the plans to
further strengthen partnerships and collaborations with
other universities in Asia and the world?
NTCU has more than 250 partner
universities overseas. In terms of the internationalization
of NTCU, the plans both abroad and at home have four
aspects:
(1)
We attend overseas education exhibitions and
international conferences to promote the unique feature of
our Teacher Education Programs and to ally with overseas
universities proactively. We provide diversify enrollments
for short-term exchange students to enrich their learning
experiences as well as sending our students to sister
schools for dual-degree programs.
(2)
We work with our sister schools and invite their
faculties and students to participate in winter and summer
camps to promote our outstanding programs and encourage
students’ registration.
In 2018, NTCU invited one
teacher and 20 students from Seoul National University of
Education in South Korea, six students from Private
University of Education, Diocese Linz in Austria, five
students from Newton College in the Czech Republic, three
students from University of Burgundy in France and five
students from Leeds Trinity University in England to join
our winter camp.

Our International Volunteer Association trains the
students from the Teacher and Non-Teacher Educational
Programs to provide professional services, such as Chinese
courses or building classrooms, to help the children in
developing countries, such as Northern Thailand and other
South-East Asian areas.
(4)
Freshman English Project-freshman English in a
multicultural Context: The project is made up of Curriculum,
teacher, student, and teaching assistant. The frame is
composed by cultural awareness, multicultural awareness,
cross-cultural competence, citizenship and responsibility.
The main goals are to foster multicultural competency among
students and to prepare students as English users with
communicative ability.
VoL:Given
Taiwan's objective to become a global R&D and innovation
center, what is the university's commitment to innovation?
According to Scimago Journal & Country
Rank (2019), in terms of the total numbers of
documents/papers produced in all subject areas, all subject
categories during the period of 1996 to 2018, Taiwan is 17th
in the world. Taiwan is 12th if we look at
country rankings in education and has an even a stronger
position , 4 th, in E-learning. As stated
previously NTCU has an excellent traditional for teacher
education and is developing a new strength in teaching and
research in E-learning, so this university will continue to
innovate its teacher education, E-learning and educational
research in order to make contributions to enhance Taiwan’s
strong position in the country’s education rankings.
VoL:How
important is R&D and having a knowledge-based economy to
assist Taiwan in remaining competitive in the global market?
According to the global manufacturing
scorecard (2018), Taiwan is 10th on the list of
the leading countries in manufacturing output. Taiwan should
continue to invest in R&D and talent development especially
in Taiwan’s competitive niche of manufacturing and its
possible application in the age of artificial intelligence
so that Taiwan has a key role to play.
VoL:What
is the university's stance on strengthening ties between
academia and industries?
It is essential for the university to
collaborate with industry closely so that research findings
and new knowledge produced by the university academia can be
transferred to industries for upgrading their practices and
then maintaining their competitive advantages. There is a
great possibility for the university academia to benefit
from this close collaboration due to the possibilities of
deeper observation of industrial current practice and
getting more applicable value of the research they are doing
and what to do.
